With Windows Phone 8 handsets cropping up left right and centre, Nokia is hoping its new flagship Lumia 920 will come out on top, firmly cementing the Finnish manufacturer as the king of Windows Phone. But does the Lumia 920 have what it takes to outshine the likes of Samsung’s ATIV S and HTC’s 8X?

Nokia Lumia 920

At first glance the Lumia 920 looks so similar to the Lumia 900 that you’d be hard pushed to tell the difference between the two. For fans of the original Lumia 900 this may be a good thing, but it would have been nice to see a bit more innovation when it comes to design.

The Lumia 920 is pretty massive and weighs quite a bit too.

The Lumia 920 is pretty massive and weighs quite a bit too, clocking in at 130.3mm x 70.8mm x 10.7mm and weighing 185g. When you compare this to the HTC 8X’s 132.35mm x 66.2mm x 10.12mm and 130g, the handset is a mammoth.

Big and beasty

The plus side of having such a large frame is that it makes room for a 4.5-inch IPS TFT PureMotion HD+ display, which offers vivid and crisp images whether you’re navigating around the user interface, flicking through photos, or watching videos. There’s also space for more juice in the tank with a larger 2000mAh battery offering power for a whole day with average use.

Multi-Core CPU

Nokia has also branched out into multi-core processors with its latest Lumia devices, and the Lumia 920 houses a Dual Core 1.5GHz Krait chip. Microsoft boss Stephen Elop had previously said that Windows Phone devices didn’t need more than a single core, but the Lumia 920 is noticeably quicker than its single-core predecessor.

Picture perfect

To put it plainly, the Lumia 920’s camera is awesome. Combining a top-notch 8.7 megapixel snapper and Carl Zeiss lens with Nokia’s new PureView technology means images captured are incredibly clear, even in low light conditions. Videos recorded using the device are of a high quality too, with an image stabilisation feature eliminating blur and camera shake when videoing on the move.

Camera Specifications and Features

Camera Specifications and Features: 8.7 MP camera (8 MP effective, 3264 x 2448 pixels), Carl Zeiss optics, image stabilization, autofocus, dual-LED flash, PureView technology, geo-tagging, touch focus, Video Record and Playback 1080p@30fps, Secondary 1.3MP Camera.

Windows Phone 8’s new Lenses feature crops up on the Lumia 920 to offer new camera functionality that goes beyond that seen on previous Lumia devices. There is now a selection of Instagram-style photo filters to choose from, as well as the Cinemagraph app that lets users create an animation within a photograph. There’s also one called Smart Shoot that captures a succession of images then lets you take the best bits two of them to create one perfect photo.

Giving users a helping hand to discover the area around them, Nokia City Lens, uses the Lumia 920’s camera to plot points of interest on the screen using augmented reality tech. It’s just another little feature that elevates this handset from being run-of-the-mill to ground-breaking.

Hands On with the Lumia 920

Final Thoughts

Positives certainly outweigh the negatives with the Lumia 920, and if you don’t mind packing such a humungous handset in your pocket, it’s definitely worth considering. Perfect for those who fancy a dabble of the new Windows Phone 8 platform and have a penchant for photography, the Lumia 920 is a shining light.
